When you're using cellular (not wifi), phone calls and text messages use the same technology.

But what's the diff between using data vs phone calls, in terms of what technology is used on one's phone?

In both cases, the phone contacts the nearest tower. Then the service will decide what to do.

Seems like you essentially asked and then answered your own question.

Nothing. It's sent over data. Voice hasn't existed in this country for 9 years.

I was more focused on the second line of my posting re the tech terminology that would be used for the two different things.

Voice uses the phone's analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion processor chip (DSP) to translate outgoing phone/audio signals to digital and incoming signals from digital back to analog.

Text/data doesn't.

They share the digital transmission pipeline (communication connection) in use...wi-fi or cellular.
