The contract system COSTS THE CONSUMER MORE, in the long run, than buying a phone outright and buying pay-as-you-go sim cards. Think about it for just a second. American cell phone providers love the contract system. Why? Because, like every other business, they love profits. And, they make more profits by focusing on contracts and usage "plans". It's all about profit.

If buying the phone outright and paying for usage "as-you-go" was more profitable, don't you think we would have seen the phone companies pushing it?

American consumers have been slow to consider this a priority. They have not put a high priority on types of service OTHER than the contract system. So, for you, the consumer, buying your mobile phone outright and then buying "pay-as-you-go" service has been hard to find. And often, coverage was spotty. But American consumers seem to be waking up to the fact that they are spending fistfuls of money on mobile phone service that they do not need to spend to get the service.

Today we can get decent coverage, and only buy what we actually use.

And I, for one, am glad for it. I can finally find a decent provider to sell me a phone and I only buy what service I use. No more, no less.
