I just got a new phone and had trouble entering a period while typing. Sometimes I had to tap the period key 2-3 times for a period to appear.

Autocorrect was always off.

I went to Google Keyboard settings and turned off "Double space for period" and also "Gesture Typing." Seems to be okay now.

These settings should NOT have been on by default! Most people are going to enter a period or space the usual ways. That has to be the stupidest default ever. Most new users are going to not see the periods appearing, and won't know why.

I hope to God that most Androids are set up this way, are they? (I have a Moto E Gen 2 with Android 5.1.)

Specifically, why would Gesture Typing (or double space for period) make it so I had to hit the period key three times for a period to appear?

I know the phone was working because something appeared each time I tapped the period key, as it does for all keys.

OMG You finally got a new phone? Woohoo!! You should have started a thread just for that!
What did you get??

As to your point: Two spaces for a period absolutely should be the default. Sorry that you only upgrade phones every 8 years, but two spaces for a period has been a default on most keyboards since the very first BB 957 shipped that way out of the box. Why WOULDN'T you like that as a default? It's much simple and faster...

Agree with Peregrine here and welcome to the 21st century Robert!

I see you have a Moto E 2nd Generation. A nice upgrade from whatever you had I'm sure.

No clue what you're talking about. I use the vanilla Google keyboard. There's a period button. If I want a period, I press it. Normally I just just double tap the space bar, not sure why you'd want to turn that off. If your phone, like mine, came with some other keyboard that you don't like, just hop on the play store and install Google Keyboard. I prefer the vanilla Google Keyboard to Samsung's, although they largely function the same.
