When you print a photo, it depends how good your printer is. If your printer can print very fine pixels that matches the camera's sensor resolution then it will come out as sharp as the sensor.

I have a good and large color printer that I use for competition. Just never had a smartphone. Trying to figure out if it is worth it to me to have one since I rarely use my "not so smart" cell phone for calls or texting. Thought it might pay off if the camera could serve as a back up to my real camera because less to lug.
My Nikon dslr camera has 24.2 megapixels and produces 6000x4000 (have lens that extends to 300mm and one that extends to 500mm). Can't lift anything larger. My Panasonic ultrazoom point and shoot has 12.1 megapixels and produces 4000x3000. While the ultrazoom produces images that are okay for digital competition (images are projected) after cropping to enlarge the subject, it does not work for me after cropping for enlarged prints (about 17x11 inches), quality-wise. (I take a lot of bird photos and cropping is always involved to enlarge the bird.)
So, I'm thinking based on your response, I would not be using cell phone photos for print competition but they could work for digital competition (projected images have to be submitted 1920x1080 mp) for limited subjects (like maybe scenics or flowers) without a loss in quality. I don't do people photos or selfies.
Thanks for your help.
