Odd. I'm with Verizon and pay just under $5 a month for taxes and fees. Perhaps there was a one time activation fee included?
Yeah, that's possible. Activation fees are as modern as buggy whips. We used to have to write a bunch of stuff on a form, fax it in to HQ, then take the answer and punch that into the phone. $30 for two minutes work.
Now the phone does it to itself in milliseconds.
Still $30.

Great idea, a service provider such as AT&T could provide faster internet speeds, more like those of cable!
Details are sketchy, but in some areas of the country AT&T supposedly is putting in fiber optic feed lines, with RG-6 coaxial drops to subscriber premises.
Cellular sites often use fiber optic lines for network backhaul, or microwave links when fiber doesn't exist, and may not for a long time.

Yea, the scammiest charge ever. These carriers make MILLIONS on "activation fees". One time $30 charge for even 500,000 people is.... just.... man.
PBS talked to some hams who were very active for Puerto Rico, connecting families who had lost communications.
Correct. I spent some time when I could listening to the ham operators pass traffic out of PR. A group hams were also deployed to the area to assist. Look up Ham Nation Episode 323 on Youtube. It's a ham radio videocast and that episode talks briefly about hams helping in the California wildfires (at about 20:00) and a bit more about the hams in PR (at about 27:00).
