well hard to get away from them as they "own" the towers on where you connect too. But if your looking IMO.. Metro is far cheaper then the rest of the MNVO and still get same coverage as its parent company Tmobile gets. Most folks live on Straight talk due to its simple plans and cheap burner phones.
Just remember that your using the same towers, just they throttle the bandwidth speed on your device. Cricket does 3mb vs Att can get up to 25mb download. Still same coverage/Tower and parent company ATT, just crappy connection speeds.
There is no single answer on who is the "best" prepaid service. It is very subjective depending on your location and/or type of phone that you are using. Not the same nationwide or worldwide for all users.
We're very satisfied with Tracfone. I've used them for about 10 years with no problems.
We get hand-me-down iPhones from our kids; my wife is currently using an iPhone 6 with a Tracfone account. They use the Verizon network in our area.
To keep the phone number current, Tracfone charges about $100 per year. You buy the minutes separately and it's a pay-as-you-go plan. Tracfone has an app that displays real time the number of minutes/data remaining in the account and the minutes roll over. Unlike some plans, they do not expire each month.
With the iPhone, when we are texting our kids [apple's imessage app], messaging goes over wi-fi so we don't use up the Tracfone cellular minutes.

people still paying per mins? wow i thought this was put out of its misery long time ago.
most prepaid is unlimited min and text, your paying for data..
I know net10 still has a few pay per min plans, but most have gone away with that.. i know a few "senior citizens" plans are still out in the wild.. only pay for what you use.
I was with Straight Talk (TracFone) for years and never had any real issues, but just switched to Red Pocket because they had better rates and so far so good with them as well.
Mintsim is a T-Mobile MVNO. Great prices for data, but you prepay for 3, 6 or 12 months. They do not offer visual voicemail or tethering, but if you get good T-Mo service where you live, its probably the best deal around.

It all depends on how many minutes you use and how much you want to spend. I've used Tracfone for more than 10 years and have a large bank of minutes that I will likely never use. It's never cost more than $7-8/month.
