I believe it stops the phone from making any noise for in church or movies but otherwise the phone is fully functional. Is that right.

Ring/silent switch: This switch, which is on the left side of your iPhone, lets you quickly switch between ring mode and silent mode. When the switch is set to ring mode — the up position, with no orange dot — your iPhone plays all sounds through the speaker on the bottom.

Right. Make sure your phone will vibrate with the ringer off so you can tell if you have an incoming call or text. It might be important and you can step out to take the call. I've had to do that more than once
