hi, i have an essential cellular tele-fone running lineage-os. i am able to cast it to my fire-tv (mirror display). when i play games/moo-vees, the sound comes out of my 5.1 stereo system. the only application where the sound only goes thru the tiny cell-fone speaker is google hangouts.
same behavior with my nvidia shield tablet connected via h.d.m.i. cable to my a/v receiver.
How old is the TV ?? What make/model ? What make/model of the phone? Not enough information provided to better assist you.
I use Google "cast" to send video and audio from my Android tablet, Samsung Galaxy S9 plus, iPad and Windows desktop computer without any difficulty. If your TV is a Smart TV, make sure it has the latest updates. Not sure if you can use that tool since your phone is running a different OS.
the television is a 1080p samsung bought in 2005 connected to a harnon/kordan 5.1 a/v receiver bought last year.

can you confirm that you can hear audio thru your stereo system while using google-hangouts from your fone/tablet ?

google-hangouts worx fine on my fone/tablet. its just that for some peculiar reason the audio refuses to go thru the a/v receiver; eventhough the audio worx fine while watching a moo-vee, playing a game, listening to music, watching vimeo, setting a calendar alarm, ...

I have never used Google-hangouts myself. Can't comment on that application. Can only confirm I can stream online video directly to my TV through all my devices. I wish you the best and hopefully you will get more suggestions/solutions from others here.
