Today I got my ATT bill and it said we may have to replace our devices soon and to look at a page.
The page says they are ending 3G and some 4G support in Feb. 2022.

The 4G phones that will not be supported are ones that are not HD Voice-capable. They also provided a list of devices that will keep working. I have an older Moto which was NOT on the list, although it has 4G. (I guess that means my phone doesn't have HD voice, which I never heard of before today.)

The huge majority or all smartphones I would buy today, have both 4G (or more) and are HD Voice capable, is that right? I could also consult that list. I'm mad about this but at least I can wait 20 months before I get a new phone.

Can someone confirm a Moto E2 is not HD Voice capable? My phone is not on their list but I'd like to know this anyway.

Just curious, did you buy that Moto E2 from At&t ?? Could be that it doesn't support HD voice on At&t. I am not certain without confirming the exact model #.

I bought it at a chain electronics place, it's a cheapo that costed like $60. It has puny storage.

It's actually four years old. I shouldn't feel bad about having to do something now.

I think it's also called XT1527, although that number is not on the phone at all if I go to About Phone.

I wonder if that is the case with most carriers? If you buy a new phone now, you will have to replace by 2022 to make 5G enabled?

It is unlikely that 5g will be widely available in 18 months. So I would not worry about having a 5g phone

I’m assuming this is the phone you are referring to:
https://m.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto..._gen)-6986.php

If so, I believe this phone is not HD voice capable. HD capable is simply using data connection (through your mobile data connection), and it makes calling much more clear without much of background noise.

I agree with your opinion about the phone. While it does use LTE for data only, it lacks VOLTE (Voice Over Long Term Evolution) and that is the issue. It cannot be retrofitted to enable VOLTE (aka HD Voice). Even when 5G is implemented, the 4G technology will not likely be shut down for a few or several years. At his time, there is no need to worry about upgrading to 5G phones yet.

unless you live in a 5G area then there's no sense in wasting money on a 5G phone yet. the 5G modems will get better over time as well. with things like supporting more radio bands as well as the next gen 5G modems will be faster as well than what we have now!!! i live in a 5G area yes the speeds are amazing but depending on what carrier your on it's not worth it yet as 99% of the country is still on 4G. do you feel like spending 1500.00 on a phone. yea there are cheaper 5G models but the experience is not the same as using a top of the line sammy galaxy!!!

heck there already working on 6G
