Anyone else getting this warning? One appeared in the middle of my attempted phone call. Why am I being prompted to "upgrade" my phone; just a sales tactic? I use the most basic and cheapest android available and only "upgraded" to this because I was forced to and given it for free when my very basic flip phone was phased out. Apparently (after perusing the website), it has to do with VoLTE?

Otterhere, what make/model phone are you using ? If your phone lacks VOLTE, it is most likely to stop working after the first of the year based on the alert you got. If you are using a CDMA phone, that network is being shut down and your carrier is likely giving you warning before the phone stops working altogether.
Yes, Tracfone uses Verizon's towers, which are switching to all VoLTE. Frankly, I'm surprised this is the first time you've had this warning, as most people have been getting them for at least a year. It was recommended that people switch early, since they said that even though the switch isn't until the end of the year, if a tower goes down, it won't be repaired so you could actually be out of service sooner than that.

Nope; first I've heard of it...unless I haven't been getting all my messages due to service going down due to VOLTE. Why do they have to keep changing things? At any rate, they're sending me a free phone, so "W"...

Thanks for posting the bolded.
I’ve been aware of the switch for 2 1/2 + years (It was supposed to happen on 12/31/19, and Verizon stopped activating 3G phones in June of 2018), but I didn’t know about the bolded. I have to change by 12/7 (or lose my sizable credit balance on an old grandfathered $2 per day plan). I was planning (and still am) to change between November 18-20 to a monthly Verizon prepaid plan in the nano sim slot (moving my AT&T number already on that new 2020 iPhone SE to the e-sim ‘slot’) to bleed out my credit balance. Now, knowing the bolded above, I’ll feel less like I cheated myself out of a few weeks of service.
I've heard about 5G forever (whatever that is), but not VOLTE.
VOLTE(4G) has been around longer than 5G in the US. Don't worry, the average user doesn't know either. I have never heard of "5G forever", it may be a nickname that one or more carrier or prepaid service/MVNO created.

I could be wrong, but I think that poster means that he/she has been hearing about 5G for a long time, not that a carrier is branding their 5G as ‘5G forever’.
