So we left Verizon after 6 years with them. I got the new iPhone 3gs and love it as a device, my wife has a Samsung 3g handset. The voice quality of the AT&T network is worse than Verizon and sometimes downright horrible. Apparently AT&T increased the compression on their voice network so it sounds tinny and hollow. In addition coverage pales in comparison, it seems whenever I am indoors it cuts in and out. I've researched this and apparently it's a limitation of GSM in general.
Am I crazy for going back to Verizon? I'm not out anything as I am within the 30 day trial period for AT&T and didn't pay any activation fees. So I can return everything, get all our $$ back, and go back to Verizon sans contract. I would just go back to using our standard family phone plan (no data or text messaging) at around $65/month after taxes for two lines w/ Verizon. So it would save us around $500/year.
The iPhone is cool but for me it's more like an "i", the Phone part isn't useful on the AT&T network.
No data, no texting. Does the actual phone type/name really matter to you? You might look into Virgin Mobile, no contract. The key here is that VM rides on the Sprint network.
Seems like each area of the country has one carrier that is the best.
I've been through Verizon & Cingular, both were terrible in my area.
Sprint works everywhere for me, there again, in my AREA.
Visited a friend 40 miles away, AT&T is the only thing that works there.
Luckily, I have "free roaming" so its not an issue.
as others are saying it seems to depend on the area. I have an iPhone and have been with AT&T for 10 years now. I tried Verizon and Sprint, but for me, AT&T works the best in my area.
I have heard people complain of dropped calls, but I haven't had ANY with my iPhone. I did have some trouble with my cheaper phones (the freebies they give you with a contract) but when I got better phones, I got a better signal.
You have to go with what works in your area, it's pointless to have a cool phone if you can't use it.
I LOVE my iPhone and I'm really glad that I can use it in my area.....

That's a pretty good scam AT&T has going on then. Meanwhile I'm using a 3 year old freebie and my wife is using a 4 year old freebie on Verizon.
I can definitely verify that though, while I had an iPhone my wife had a $30 cheapie. It sounded like HF radio.

lol, maybe....
Actually I think it is because even though we are in the same "area" we have moved. We are 26 miles from where we were and I think there are less power lines to interfere with our calls.
It's more likely that AT&T doesn't have the towers in your area. Here we get 3G, there are still people who have AT&T and don't even get that.....
Nope, a ton of towers. Also 3G. 5 bars. Full coverage.
