Hi, I am from Maine and looking to relocate to the south. I have researched many places and keep coming back to Summerville. I have been looking on line at homes for sale in my price range (140,000) and have found some beautiful homes. My question is, I have two boys 9 and 11, are the neighborhoods in that price range safe? They look lovely on tree lined streets, but is there distinct areas that are better than others? Thank you I appreciate any information.

I am from Maine too. The Old Town area. We have been down here for just one year now and love it. The winter here was awesome considering what us "Maineahs" are used to.
We are living in the 29483 area code. If you have specific questions or just want to check things out through another Yankee, email me at seth2000@sc.rr.com.

29483 is "historic downtown summerville" and is the best part of Sville IMO.

They're both big zip codes though. Summerville is always a great place to look for homes. It might be a better idea to ask about specific neighborhoods you're looking in, however. You'll get some more specific responses that way.

The area near Summerville's farmers market is lovely IMO. I'd stay away from the area up 17A near the Wal-Mart as it's too busy. The closer you get to Hwy. 61 the better.

Actually, Weatherstone park is on 17A and it is a great location as it is the first right turn off the highway and it is 29483 Berkley county. The worst subdivisions traffic wise are the ones that you have to pass through the mall district as well as the downtown.

As far as quality of location in 29483 is that it is hit or miss. At the edge of the park is some Dorchester county housing of Palmetto that isn't that nice. Like anything you just have to pick your area's. Also there are some trailer parks close to the Sangaree area.

Everyone is right on. 29483 is a great zip in most areas, but there are a few I wouldn't recommend. Which ones (neighborhoods) are you considering?

That is on the Sangaree side of town, a little less desirable, some crime issues and the schools are Berkeley County not DD2...
