IOP may feel touristy if you park & walk straight off the bridge. Luckily most folks do this which leaves our preferred spot less crowded.

I've never been to Kiawa's beaches, but they aren't far from Charleston and fit the criteria.

Pawley's & Edisto...both an hour or more (way more for Pawley's) from Charleston aren't what "I" consider near the city. If I were going to Pawley's, especially, I would choose to stay somewhere besides Charleston.

We don't go to Front Beach on Isle of Palm -- but it still gets VERY busy.......and is more crowded than Kiawah.

I always go to IOP. I used to go to the "touristy" area of the beach, until someone told me of the quieter area.

Sometimes the touristy area of the beach is fun.....the people watching.....amazing.....

Son likes to surf and I'm not always into the Folly Beach run so we tend to find the quieter spots. That still can be a problem. There was a guy insisting on surf fishing with a bunch of kids on surf boards not far off. Some people just don't have any brains......

cape, the OP didn't say they wanted close to Charleston. They just said they didn't want Myrtle Beach.

No the swimmers & surfers were there first -- fisherman came later and plopped himself in the midst...

Plug for Kiawah and Seabrook Islands Both are very low-key and family friendly. Neither is an "overly populated beach."

What you give up for the price of peace and quiet of a private island--proximity to fast food and mass amounts of restaurants. Kiawah has a hotel and several restaurants located at each golf course. Seabrook has no hotel and only a private club which you can only use if you rent from an owner who has a membership.

There are several restaurants within a 10 minute drive to both Kiawah and Seabrook ( at Bohicket Marina and Freshfields Village).

You may decide to keep your vacay very low-key by picking up local produce and fish/shrimp and cooking at home.

Sullivan's Island. Pricey, rentals are hard to find for a family of 4 but can be done. Edisto Beach we stay on the beach and it is totally out of touch with commercial tourist anything. Just don't plan on getting to town quick.
