I am not a fan of overly populated beaches, so Myrtle Beach outside of my initial visit is out of the picture. I am looking for two types of beaches:

#1 Nice family-oriented

#2 Nice not too rowdy adult beaches

I am use to beaches like Ocean City, MD and Virginia Beach, Virginia and I do not like in most cases.

I find Kiawah Beach very family friendly and it's on the top 10 list of most beautiful beaches in America

Myrtle Beach has tons of low key beaches, the State Park, Myrtle Heights, Dunes Club etc. They aren't hard to find either. Myrtle Beach isn't just a strip of sand with high rise hotels.

That said, any beach in July or August anywhere will be busy.

I like Pawleys Island, IOP, Sullivans Island, or Edisto Beach.

I recommended Pawleys Island to a coworker, and his family just returned from there ... they *loved* it, and are already planning their next vacation there.

Pawleys Island is great but expensive to rent on the beach. Edisto beach is very low key and very pretty...and you can get a rental on the beach.

Kiawah Beachwalker park is gorgeous -- but not rental on the beach.

IOP & Folly -- touristy -- rentals on the beach or just off the beach.

Sullivan -- a little quieter but rentals on the beach. Cottagey feel to the community.

Edisto Beach..

Went to school in NC and used to visit Edisto a few times every year. If your not into overly touristy locations then this is a pretty good spot. There is only one hotel, 2 gas stations on the entire island, no fast food except for 1 subway built into the gas station, and I believe there isn't even a single stoplight. They have a nice golf course on the island and the beach is great. Lots of nice beach houses for rent.

Would definitely be a nice and quiet spot to take a family vacation in my opinion.

Sullivan's is my favorite beach and we go often. Certain areas on IOP are good, some more touristy but nothing like Myrtle Beach.
