Like so many, I got a job with Boeing and waiting for the word on my starting date. Could be at any moment now.
I'm tired of the panorama and wide angle pics.tired of seeing clubhouse pics instead of bathroom or kitchen pics;I know the cheap furniture/appliances look..no matter how much u shine it up...! In other words: I know the game when looking for a place online. I live here in Florida in a college town. I dont think there is any trick in the rental game that I have not encountered.
Facts about us:
I'm ex-Army.was army brat b4 that. Seen a lot. Been all over the world. In my mid-30s, ready to make my kids future a good one!!!! Thought I was on my way...got laid offfffff!! Thanks a bundle! Moving right along...!
Wife is from the Philippines and No, we are not a stereotypical online dating(nothing wrong with that) Fil/Am couple. We are quite real!!
looking for 3/1,3/2 or 2/2.
Budget: $600-$900 (900 really isnt ideal, since my salary is not the greatest yet and I am the only 1 working til we get settled and wife can get employment)
2 kids(5 and 1), no pets(and glad if I dont see any, since ppl seem to be unable to properly care for them.)
Since we have kids...troubled areas are simply unacceptable!Been there done that! Went after this job in order to get out of this sort of mess in the first place)
Close to Boeing would be great, but I will exchange a long commute for my kids safety any day)
Decent schools. My 5 year old will start kindergarten this month and my 1 year old will have to go to daycare when mommy is employed)
(I know all my requirements and my budget dont exactly match up. But I also know that most ppl just dont look hard enough or dont compromise and therefore dont find what they want.)

So, if anyone can share some knowledge, that'll be great! Thank You!

You can check the other Boeing threads here in this forum and also do some searches in West Ashley or N. Charleston, perhaps Summerville if you are up to driving.

You can also do a search on the schools here, tons of threads on that.

The search feature is near the upper right of the main forum page. Good luck!

Budget: $600-$800 would probably be more realistic. Unfortunately I am unable to edit the original post, so I have to do it this way...!

I don't think you would be able to find a single family home you would be happy with but there are plenty of apartment options. OTC made two very good suggestions.

I would take a look at Castlewood townhouses in West Ashley if you can get away with a 2/2. Units are 2 floors and large in size. 675-690 with water and basic cable included. Complex is very large and safe with alot of police officers living on site. I've shopped around the area for months and Castlewood has been the best deal I've found.

First of all Thanks for the replies.

@1lisat That may be somewhat correct since I'm not in the area yet and cant dedicate 1 or 2 months to househunting. I have learned that the best rental deals are privately owned properties. The issue there is that usually they are not well advertised and tough to find if you are not from there. Maybe once we are all settled in SC, it will be easier and we may even look to purchase at some point. Who knows? But thanks for your honesty and good advice.

@johnnypockets Yes, I have come across these b4, but honestly haven't done any research on Ashley yet. So, I dont know anything about the surrounding area. I'll try to get informed tonight. So far, I always ended back up in Summerville with Goose Creek as a close second.

Does anyone know about Sawbranch Apartments and/or Darby Development in general?

Thank you all for taking the time to post back!!

I went on a walkthrough at Sawbranch in Summerville and liked what I saw there. Price was great for Summerville and the community seemed clean and quiet. My only complaints were there are no porches or balconies, and a long commute to downtown (far from I-26 but close to Dorchester rd). I chose to move to West Ashley in January. My budget is close to yours but specific needs may be different.

If I had to approach (as in drive to work at Boeing during rush hour) I would want to becoming up I526 from the south or in from the East (International Blvd), or maybe even East on Dorchester Ave and in as toward the airport.

The problem is the areas East of Boeing are not one of the more desireable areas like off Rivers Ave, East of I526 and Dorchester Ave much East of Ashley Phosphate Blvd.

I would want to avoid coming in on I26, the I526/I26 intersection, and coming over the Don Holt Bridge. Mount Pleasant to the airport (ala Boeing) was never a bad drive, but I can see it becoming a horror show once Boeing cranks up.

While not overly familiar with the area, it seems to me that coming from West Ashley Blvd area to I526 to Boeing would be the easier drive.

All that said for what I read and based on prices, I believe most of the Boeing employees will gyrate West of Booeing (Summerville area) thus making I26 and Dorchester Blvd a real cummuting nightmare.

Of course, I could be wrong.

Just be careful when signing a lease, don't be afraid to tweak it to your advantage - I have noticed down here that private landlords have a habit of keeping your security deposit for bogus reasons - put in your lease that a final walk through together will determine security deposit refund that is mutually agreed upon. Also, take pictures of everything before you put your stuff in, and then again after you clean. Put in there that the landlord may take out a cleaning fee but cap it at no more than $150. Put in there that the place will be left in "broom swept" condition, and normal wear and tear, you will not pay for entire new carpet replacement - period. Trust me, I have been through this not only with myself, but with many clients and friends - protect yourself at all costs or you will no see your security deposit again. If you have pets, they usually charge a one time non-refundable fee, make sure that this fee is the most they can charge.
