Hello all, so happy to find this site/forum.

I'm a new member & was hoping to pick your collective brains. I moved from the UK to NE FL last year to marry my Florida lovemuffin, & am enjoying exploring the South East area.

Hubby & I (aged 29-31)) will be visiting Charleston SC over Labor Day weekend (staying from Fri 31st - Tues 3rd) to spend some time with the inlaws (who are fairly recent additions to Charleston & therefore not a great source of info).

Besides spending quality time with the family, Hubby & I want to plan a decent itinerary of things to see/do in order to make the most of our mini holiday.

Although numerous websites list hundreds of things to do, I would like to get some suggestions from people who have actually done those things in order to weed out the outstanding from the average.

Are there any extra special events happening in/around the Charleston area that we should not miss?
Any special Labor weekend events that Charleston regulars would suggest?
Any diners, breakfast joints, bars or restaurants that simply have to be visited for that unique Charleston experience?
Any live music of note going on (anything from jazz to rock, all things considered)?
Although there are numerous plantation houses around Charleston, as well as many house museums within the Down Town area, what are the best ones in your opinions?
What walking/bus tours stand out from the pack?

Thank you so much for your help, it's much appreciated as we really want to make the most of what might be an extra special weekend, even by usual Charleston standards. And yes, we're bracing ourselves to wade through all the other tourist hoards.

What part of the area do your in-laws live in? That will give us a starting point as to what you will be close to. Traffic here will be really bad in and around Down Town Charleston and ALL of the beaches...

For Plantations you can't beat Magnolia Gardens...

If you are going to brave the DT traffic, Jestin's and The Hominy Grill are favorites for Lunch and Breakfast...

Although I'm not sure how Charleston is divided up, I do know that the inlaws live near the Goose Creek reservoir.

We're not scared of driving in/around Charleston, or venturing outside into the surrounding areas if there are noteworthy locations/events that require a bit of a drive.

Thank you very much for the info you provided, with so many Plantations available it's nice to single it down to the one(s) that offer the best experience. Also love the lunch/breakfast suggestions, meaning we can skip out on the hotel breakfast & enjoy early morning Charleston.

BOONE HALL PLANTATION: 2011 Piggly Wiggly BBQ and Bluegrass Festival At Boone Hall Plantation

Looks like they're skipping it this year - wonder why? It sounds great!

Bummer! I was going to go this year. Is it normally held in the big field on rte 17? If so, it might be cancelled because of the road construction. That is why they cancelled the strawberry festival earlier this year, at least that is what a worker told me.

Yeah I'm not buying that the 'road construction' canceled those events. The road construction is near completion and they have had other events without any issues.

This sucks! This is why I go to Va. Beach almost every labor day weekend. I like Charleston , but they don't do much of anything ever for one of the best Holidays of the year - Labor day, the end of summer celebration. Va. Beach is having an awesome music festival with Candlebox, Soul Asylum, Train, OAR, Cheap Trick, 38 Special....many of them are free! This is down at the Oceanfront in the evenings and afternoons. There is also a Marathon taking place that weekend. It is always a good time there!
Why can't Charleston do some things on the Holidays like down at the beach, concerts, or festivals like you mentioned at Boone Hall, at least that would be something. Hope something is going on for you in Charleston when you visit , but I will be in VB! Travel there if you want some action.
