I'm considering a move from dreary DC to the Charleston area. If I were to do this and then get laid off , I'm wondering what the area is like for tech and govt contractors. Thank you.

Tech and Government are pretty good hear. Look on business social networks and link up. Most contractors feed Boeing, for example.

I would say most contractors feed SPAWAR. Over 9,000 in the Charleston area.

True, I was using BOEING as an example as they are a popular company outside of the military people.

That helps. My company is a large international conglomerate, but better safe than sorry. Just like to make sure I am covered no matter what.

You should check with SAIC, as well. They've got a local presence.

If you're from DC you'll probably recognize Honeywell, Deloitte, and Booze too.

What kind of tech work do you do?

Mostly DoD here, but some IRS, DHS, and State Dept.

You'll also find contracting here is much more about your network, personal relationships, and past performance than in DC. Other than a contract vehicle the person is more important than the company they work for long term. All the players know each other down here. Retreading can be a pot harder if you don't preform, not that you have that issue.

Good luck

You are sweet. That is great information. I am a Project Mgr/Planner. I don't have a lot of contacts in that area, so I would have to work on that. I am currently with a Gov't Contractor company. It's okay, but I find DC and the surrounding areas to be very distasteful for me.

The role is with my company, so if it happens, I'd stay with my company and scoot down there. But one never knows, now does she?

This is all great feedback.
