The only thing that made that morning not a complete waste was the look on the sales guys face when I laughed at him when he asked for my social. I said "let's see if you can find me a truck before we start talking about money pal." I already had good financing lined up so I didn't need them running my credit for their health.
Stepping off-topic for a minute here. When I was looking for a car a couple of years ago, Sentry GMC, now Baker, did the same thing to me before we even looked at a car. I gave him my WTH look. Then he gave me an Acadia to test drive for a day....bring it back tomorrow. Well, I drove it for a few hours then took it back because of engine noise. He had the paperwrok worked out and ready to sign.
The kicker....it was ONLY $600+ a month. I gave him my WTH are you talking about look. Then walked away as I told him that I look at bottom line dollars...the payments takes care of itself.
Thanks for all the input! Techgeek, that story is awful! Thats exactly why used car dealers are stereotyped the way they are. I'm sure there are plenty of good dealers out there, shame when the others ruin it for the industry.
We are having a bit of a hard time finding our truck - hubby only wants a compact 4 cyl because of high gas prices (he doesn't need it for work, just for convenience) and there doesn't seem to be too much out there in the <$10,000, <100,000 mile range... We found a good deal in Myrtle Beach yesterday and by the time we got someone to call us back, the truck was gone
I suggest a financial calculator or a loan app for a smart phone.
My last new car deal, I just had a financial calculator, and they refused to give me a bottom number, so i just reverse worked the loan and kept saying, ok, we agree on this, and this, and this, so what is this extra $800 for?
They woudl play the story, of the finance guys work that out, so I ask to speak with them, and worked it out and showed, the numbers we agreed on, taxes, fees, etc... and why didn't our numbers match.
I mean whats an extra $30 a month? That is only a dollar a day, I can just skip that coffee I drink at mcd's according to the dealer. No, I don't drink coffee, and $30 a month works out to close to $1500 on the price of the car. LOL.

The walk away from Hoover was the best part.
After a couple of truly pathetic attempts to "earn my business" (they weren't even trying), I asked the sales guy if my keys were in my truck because he didn't have them. I know rookie mistake. He said they were and I left. They weren't.
I went back in and one of the sales managers handed me my keys and practically begged me to let him take a crack at it before I left. I said sure. He came back a minute later with a printout and asked me to read it over. I started reading and got 3 or 4 lines down the page and handed it back to him. I said "When I first walked in I told you I didn't want a white truck. What color is this truck? Strike one."
He came back with another print out. I don't remember what was wrong with that one but it ended up being strike two.
The third one was truly hysterical. He tried to play hard ball and he isn't good at hard ball. He handed me a printout and said "I won't install anything on this truck but we can get the price you want on it." I looked at the printout and said "It doesn't have running boards. I need those because my mom can't get in my truck without them." He said he could put running boards on it and I patted him on the shoulder and said "Strike three" and left.
The problem that day was they needed my business a lot more than I needed a new truck (I had a new truck-still do) and they weren't even kind of trying. They were acting like I HAD to buy something. Sure, it might have been nice to have a brand new truck in the drive way two years in a row but not necessary at all.
The whole reason I was there in the first place kind of goes back to the USAA thing. I occasionally check the car buying service to see if I can get a decent deal on anything or to see if there are any specials going on or just for fun. Hoover was one of the dealers that came back and one of their admin girls called me to set something up. I told her that I don't do business with Hoover and she begged me to give them one last shot. I said show me what you can do and we'll see. She called around and called me back saying that the MC dealership was the best bet because they needed a current gen pre owned Ram and could most likely make me the best deal. I told her what I owed on my trade and that I would not take less than that for it, I told her that I would take the same truck for less money or more truck for the same money but I wasn't going to spend more money on anything than I already was. They knew what deal they needed to make when I walked in there and they still blew it.
