Mt. Pleasant is a little town, it is not a city. I never thought it was much of anything except clean and nice looking and small. It is just a small town and you would know this is you were from a big city with all due respect.
North Augusta, Myrtle Beach, Aiken, and Barnwell are cities with populations of 21,348; 27,109; 29,524; and 4,750 respectively. Mount Pleasant is a town with a population (2010) of 67,843. However, with it's current population, Mt. Pleasant is the 4th largest in the state.
Now I'm sure you're going to say, but Charlotte, now that's a BIG city. I'm sure those from New York would respectfully scoff at that. It's all relative. Compared to the city of Barnwell, Mt. Pleasant is a booming big city too.
See, the real trick is picking out bananas of your preference. Be warned though that you may encounter people who you may not have previously met, and who have no vested interest in your peel-smoking habits, but who nevertheless feel it is their duty to point out that there are other types of bananas out there and you are somehow less intelligent of a consumer by choosing and paying for the bananas which appealed to you.
I thought your post about the banana peels was my favorite of the day, but you managed to top yourself.
Where I come from the exact same house can be as much as 300k more from one city to another. That has been pretty standard in every county I have ever lived in. When I read this tired old rant about how MP residents are over paying it has reached the point of being amusing to me. It's like these people have never been anywhere else in the country and think that this "phenomenal cost difference" is unique to this region. I have looked around, out of curiosity, and a house comparable to mine in style upgrades and size is cheaper everywhere else I look, but rarely more than 50 grand cheaper. I consider that 50 grand money well spent, and for the life of me I can't understand why other people find that choice so upsetting.
We get it already. They don't like Mount Pleasant. After ten minutes in Goose creek I can't get out of that town fast enough, but you don't see me on here implying that the people who choose GC as their home have somehow been duped.

Where did you come from? (let me guess..the tone in your message gives me a clue) Because in the majority of the South, "this phenomenal cost difference" IS unique. We live in an equestrian neighborhood in a house about the same size and age, acreage, and appearance as those on Colonel Vanderhorst in Dunes West and most only appraises from 225-250k. I live in a large city on the east coast of NC. What 2800sf house can you get for that in Mt P with large oaks on acreage? Previously, we were from Winston-Salem and Charlotte (both large cities).
I like Mt Pleasant and prefer that side of Charleston. I'm quite sure folks in Summerville and Goose Creek get a lot more bang for their bucks; it's obviously more comparable to normal pricing in the South.
I'm not sure about the comment about banana peels. Several posters here use the forum to fraternize and chit-chat back and forth, so I assume this is a personal joke.
"If more people want something, they will be willing to pay more for it. A good example is the newest basketball shoes. Everybody wants them, and they will be willing to pay more than they normally would to get them. The demand goes up. Why? Because more people want them. The price also goes up. Why? Because the seller knows he or she can get more money for the product because it is in demand."
I moved from Atlanta to Mt. Pleasant and many of the folks I know moved from Florida, other parts of South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. Some of us spent more on our MP home then we had in our other homes.

It is purely supply and demand.
Exactly.. you Southerners had to pay more. Why? What created the absurd supply and demand that has recently doubled costs? It wasn't like that in the 90's, even in 2000..
I had a thought somewhere, but I've got a sweet light buzz going, so it'd be incoherent anyway.
I love all of Charleston. Beez does too. We just found our place to live, just like you've found yours.
I dig you Mt Pleasant folks. Why don't we just have some fun all over this cool place, and do the whole city....then we can go back to our respective choices and smile...and do it all again
