Is the historic downtown right on the beach or walking distance?

There isn't a beach downtown, but you can walk to the harbor.

You can walk to the Battery where the Ashley and Cooper rivers meet to form the Atlantic Ocean.

How far is downtown from the beach? Ok, so is there a boardwalk with shops, restaurants, etc on the beach? If so, where and what?

Would one day be enough to tour the downtown area and do the carriage ride and boat ride tour?

IOP has a little area with some beach shops and restaurants. I would take more than one day for downtown. You can spend a whole day just walking around because there is so much to see.

Where are the best areas/streets to walk around? I've heard of King St, Main St and Rainbow row. Are they all in the same vicinity?

you could spend a week in down town alone and not see everything, we still go down there every now and again looking for the new or unique. We ate lunch at Leaf today....

Rainbow Row is beautiful but IMO you don't get much more out of it walking than you would a carriage tour. Seems that nearly all carriage tours go through, so if you were already planning on doing one of those you may want to tour first, decide if you want to walk it later. Definitely go to Market St., and King St. if you like shopping and/or art galleries. King St. has lots of nice little boutique-style shops but it's also where you're going to find your big-name corporate stores as well... Gap, Urban Outfitters, Williams-Sonoma... stuff like that.

If you're in a time crunch and want to try to do downtown in one or two days, just keep doing what you're doing and gather info so you can have a loose agenda to try to squeeze everything in. Otherwise, you'd probably do yourself a favor to park your car somewhere near Market St, E. Bay, King, or Meeting St. and just wander. You're bound to find plenty of what you may not even realize you're looking for.
