My fiancé and I are moving to Mount Pleasant in 4.5 months and we have been counting the days for the past 1.5 years! We are moving from NYC and couldn’t be more excited to be leaving. I grew up spending summers in SC and always felt it was where I was meant to live! We want to live north of the IOP and rent a house for at least our first year there. Our price range is around $1900 - $2100 per month. I was wondering if any of you could tell me (given that I am around 20 weeks from moving) what I should be doing at this point. Meaning… I was told by brokers that because I am renting I shouldn’t contact them until around 8 weeks before I plan on moving. Does this sound about right? Is there anything I should be doing now to help this move go as smooth as possible? I found a moving company but they also said to call back a little bit closer to the move (which I thought was strange). Any advice would help. Thank you!

That sounds right 8 weeks out.... because that's when people give their notice to move out... 60 days notice is the norm around here...sometimes 30

Start surfing the net for neighborhoods you want to target for rentals...

Welcome in advance and congratulations..

Yeah, you -might- be able to find a vacant home or landlord willing to hold a property until you get here. But I'd spend your time now focusing in on a specific neighborhood/location, so that if something pops up un the next couple months, you can jump on it early.

Thank you so much for your responses! We LOVE Rivertowne, Dunes West, parts of Park West and we saw a house in Planters Pointe last year that we really liked as well. I guess those are the areas we are focused on. I have to say, we also liked Chrleston National but it might be a little to quite, not sure. We want a real neighborhood feel. I would really like to get involved in the community when we get down there.

Charleston National IS very quiet. It seems to be about half retirees, and half younger families. It's ideal for us because we are pretty antisocial, but you may not find that community feel you are looking for.

My boyfriend and I are interested in Mt.Pleasant. We are also from NY state (grew up in the albany area and I also lived in NYC for 5 years). My Boyfriend is a police officer, and were trying to figure out what the Mt.Pleasant Police dept. is like? We have read a bad review that the department has some bad stuff going on internally, but that was 1+ years ago. If anyone has any info. for us, it would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!

Your BF might also want to look into the Charleston City Police Dept. They will be hiring more officers this year.

I'm not sure what the Mt.P Police department has going on internally, but I know externally they're very professional and extremely courteous.

I also think CPD pays more than Mt.Pleasant P.D., definitely worth a look.
