Oh yes, don't get me started on SCE&G. My winter bill runs right about the same as summer, even though I hate forced heat and run it as little as possible.
Of course, it doesn't help that the genius who built my house placed the upstairs thermostat right at the top of the stairs, so when we do have the heat on the warm air from downstairs flows up and the tricks the thermostat upstairs into thinking the house is much warmer than it is. Every winter I say I'm gonna move it, but winter passes so quickly I always forget.
Hey, another thing to GREATLY consider is property tax.
I feel like I live here for free when it comes to property tax. From NY at $12K+ to Cincinnati at $6.5k (they said I lived in a HIGH tax area) to $1.4k in Mt P.

BARGAIN!
Absolutely! We paid about $4k in Washington, which actually has pretty low property taxes. We pay less than half that for a house assessed at almost the exact same amount.

roxanne: my thermostat is in the same place & the COLD air from the direct downstairs front door (should be replaced) flows up & tricks the upstairs into thinking its colder than it is overall!

Mine is in direct line with the front door too. I never thought about what that does to it. Probably since I run the heat so rarely.
My downstairs thermostat is in front of the garage door, and opening that makes it kick on all the time.

I swear we must have the same house builder. I have the same thing - along with the hardly controlled temp in the FROG too.
I have tried so many things to get my electric bill down that I finally just gave up. Ended up the same as when I was trying to keep it low - go figure.
I easily see $300 plus each month but I figure, based on talking to other people, that I'm a higher than norm kind of person.
Property taxes in our county in MD are a killer. My eyes go wide when I read how low some of the property taxes are on homes we are considering. It sucks to hear that there is a messy electric provider in SC - we have one too, called BGE. We pay lots of money extra so that they can subsidize. That's just electric...then there's propane (don't get me started). So, it certainly sounds like the cost of living is less for many things.
It all factors in, especially when we consider heating, leaf and snow removal and car insurance (which I think Baltimore is the highest in the US).
Quality of life is what we are after, but we will take some savings too...
We pay $150/week for full time daycare. $20\day for after school care. - In MtP
