I do think in the road way like that is a bit unusual....especially on Ashley Phosphate. I see them all the time but have yet to see one in a road as traveled as Ashley Phosphate.

Have a simple camera.. no great zoom lens

I would guess 20'

Felt comfortable at 20' standing there

Then after I took the shots.. I went a bit closer and wacked him on the nose with a long tree trunk to impress upon him.. do not sun on my bank anymore.

The water is yours.......... this bank was mine.. go sun somewhere else.. plenty more shoreline to choose from.

He hightailed it into the water.. they do not like to get hit on the snout and never sunned at my shore again

That is WAY to close for me...

I have a big dog who strongly dislikes water so I don't have to worry about him getting curious. Now if I had a lab that liked to swim. I would be nervous. My dog I can barely get him to get a bath never mind voluntarily swim.

Pets, dogs are what one has to worry about.
They will venture close and bark and since the alligator will not budge... the dogs will get closer and closer and hang around and get snapped up

As a biologist with the state wildlife told me once. He's not in 'your' backyard. You're in "his" backyard. They have been here a lot longer than us as we continue to build out into wilderness.
Saw one in the water retention pond at Northwoods Mall a few years ago.
If you try to relocate them they will always come back to where they were born.
