I like North Charleston. I love West Ashley- hey I bought a home here. Just that neither seem to have super good reputations from those who don't live there (the people who live in these areas generally like it and have lots of pride in their communities, though ).
In fairness, it's not the entire areas of North Charleston or West Ashley. There are small areas within those places that are the issue. There are some wonderful neighborhoods in both. Anyone who has lived in Charleston for any length of time understands that.
When we find a house that fits our family, its assigned to a school that no one seems to like, and sometimes just fractions of a mile away will be a school parents rave about. Its beyond frustrating.
If your address falls into a poor school district, is there anyway to not send your kids to those schools, but send to a better school close by but in a different school district?

Yes, there are some ways you can get your child into a different school. Here is a page to help you navigate that process. CCSD Portfolio of School Options
Be careful though......you can apply to have your child attend another school...and they may say yes NOW...but at any time they can decide not to allow you to do it.

I've also heard this.. Hence why I elected to eliminate the middle-man and just move to a good overall district. It's definitely a load off my mind knowing my kid won't be in that predicament.
