I am in Summerville. Dorchester County is currently the fastest growing county in the state. The population growth has exploded here over the past 5 years with an increase of close to 10,000 people. The current population is estimated to be around 37,000 now. Summerville still has the look and feel of a small town, but like I said, rapid population growth is showing some change. There is no public transportation here, but there has been recent talk of a rail system between Charleston and Summerville. 96% of commuters currently drive to work. There is no typical mall here, not yet anyway. There is a shopping center which has a Belk, Target, Kohl's, TJ Maxx and a Marshall's and of course there is a Walmart, but other than that you would have to drive to North Charleston for a mall. There are rumors of more stores on the way though.

Mount Pleasant is located closer to the ocean and the home prices there are about 20-25% higher because of the location. I lived near the ocean for 11 years before coming here and we had to evacuate for 7 hurricanes, so living near the ocean has lost it's appeal for me, not to mention the home owner's insurance rates have sky rocketed recently. The population of Mount Pleasant is around 60k. There is an outdoor Town Centre shopping mall. It is not under roof like you would think of a typical mall, but it does have your more popular stores. Mount Pleasant does have public transportation since it is part of Charleston County.
