Notable though that Charleston, Mt P, the barrier Islands, Summerville and Goose Creek are all there with pretty low crime numbers. Notable also that North Charleston is not on the list.
Making a list of 50 'cities' in SC starting with communities bigger than 5000 people, is generating statistics premised on such ridiculous small sizes and relative scale that they are all but meaningless.
The social dynamics and fabric of any rural community are so vastly different to that of any city of more than 50,000 people that it is laughable to even mention them in the same sentence, much less include them in the same list as it relates to crime or anything else.
Either compare cities of like size across state lines to resolve relative safety, or at the very least take a baseline minimum population before starting to compare.
In short, this list is now in my top ten most useless lists list ... there I said it.
Look at it this way; suppose the site just said these are the communities around Charleston that have the lowest violent crime per capita statistics. I found it interesting which communities made the list and which didn't. It's just a tidbit of information for questions oft asked on this forum about safe places to live. It's not a definitive answer, it's kind of dumb that it includes so many cities in SC, and it screws up by ignoring it's own "5000 population" criteria and including Cowpens but it still offers a little comparison of the communities around Charleston even if it is in the form of just statistics.
30 years ago when I moved here with a 6 month old we were told by someone that Folly Beach was a hotbed of criminal activity with murders happening on a regular basis. We were new to the area and had no idea what was true or not. A tidbit like this would have helped provide a clearer picture. (we moved to Folly anyway)
The link in the original post, on the first pic in the slideshow says:
Criteria: The town must have a population greater than 5000 as of 2012.
The second link that Chrome provided says 2000
