i love charleston, but charleston sure does hate me. Just took 1 hour to travel 7 miles on 526 / Don Holt
it's hard enough to understand how traffic got this bad without anybody in the state leg. doing anything. but what is REALLY baffling is how SCDOT and the state legislature seem to have nothing whatsoever in the future pipeline to provide relief. There's no light at the end of the tunnel, this is just how things are going to continue to be indefinitely.
I think there's plans to widen all of I-526, starting in 2018 or so. Though, widening doesn't necessarily mean smoother traffic. As long as people have to commute from one city to the other, there will be those days.

A prime example of SCDOT is represented by 26 from Columbia to Charleston. It was a mess 30 years ago when I was at USC. It's just gotten worse. And that was before the 77 interchange.
Google "526 widening". There is some info, but mostly about a year old.
ok, i see it now. I knew they intended to improve the western half of 526, mainly the interchanges, but I did not realize that they were also going to expand the eastern half to a full 3 lanes.
one thing i read said construction would start in 2018, another thing said 2019.
I will try to call Charleston County Council to see what the status is. I am sick of the traffic on Johns Island on the Stono Bridge every day, it is getting worse and worse. I may sell my house and move soon, I am sick of waiting for the County Council to do something.
