The latest I am reading on completing Interstate 526 is (1) it being completed in phases, and (2) the city of Charleston paying $150 million or more to complete a phase.

From an email from the CCL today:

Also on the agenda tomorrow, Council will vote to authorize the SCDOT to use $500,000 from the 2004 half-cent sales tax annual allocation funds to finish the permitting process for the completion of I-526. This money will come from the $2 million set aside for smaller road projects, such as resurfacing roads and filling potholes, to fund a project that the county is actively unwinding with the State Transportation Infrastructure Bank.

I stand corrected, but the news is even better. It will not be on the November ballot to vote on, it will simply be a county council to move on with funding for 526. They will still present plans for Phase I to the SIB.

This will keep I-526 completion alive (Phase I).

Carolina Knight. The key word is propose.

LocalHero, I saw that. Only looking at permission, not building anything.

Silver-Fox, it's only right of way stuff. No funding for actual building.

As long as it ends with an extra bridge to Daniel Island I don't care if the entire thing is finished, it's a safety hazard in the even of a hurricane as is.

After this passes (which it will) they will then submit the proposal for funding to the SIB in writing for Phase I to Johns Island.

The full council would still have to vote on anything before it could even go to the SIB. Which could just tell them to pound sand.

I have zero confidence in what county council is trying to do here. Don't trust them. This is the same council that just punted the decision to SCDOT on the proposed pedestrian/bike lane on the Legare Bridge.

But I support finishing 526 so I hope I'm wrong.

Whether it's completed or not at this point, you need more ways on and off the island other than Main and Maybank. Safety is the biggest priority and right now Johns I feels like a sitting duck. And traffic will just get worse.

If not 526, maybe an extension of Wappoo Rd, or another road to connect River Rd with 17 between 526 and Main. Another road to connect Johns and James Island be could looked at as well to take some pressure off Maybank.

I agree 100%, I have sat at the end of Wappoo Rd and looked across the Stono to see where I live and the bumper to bumper Stono Bridge at 500 pm. It's a direct line from the end of Wappoo Rd to the Stono Bridge.
