I never thought evacuation was the biggest problem on Johns Island- people leave at all different times and they are more likely to clog up at other choke points. The day in day out traffic at rush hour & what that is translating into on James Island/West Ashley are why I think its needed. And whether or not its build- there will be even more houses on Johns Island. At which point a whole new set of people will start clamoring for its completion.

Moving on to Summey- the problem doesn't appear to be so much that he is a lying liar who lies as that he is apparently and idiot to boot. You cannot change scope, use or cost of a capital project in this state without jumping through major hoops. That he thought he could get the infrastructure bank to pencil in hundreds of millions for one project and totally shift those $ to completely different uses is beyond asinine.

All in all Charleston needs more than one interstate leaving and coming into town.
I-73 was planned to come into Mt. Pleasant, but well you know how that goes. Wasn't the highway department's fault.
As with so many other things the locals just don't like progress.
Greenville has two, Spartanburg has two, Florence has two, Columbia has three. And good ole Charleston has 'One'.
The oldest most developed city and still growing. And fast becoming the largest city in the state again, but complain about everything new.

I agree. We need another highway all together. Cant keep on adding lanes to the existing ones.

South Carolina should start developing a high speed rail network. Start by joining Charleston and Columbia along the 26 corridor. Future connections to Greenville and Myrtle Beach. Get NC and GA on board to connect up to the SC system to access Savannah, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Wilmington.

Sigh, it's fun dreaming sometimes.

I do think eventually US 17 will be upgraded to near-interstate standards with bypasses built around many of the current slow spots. This is already being done in NC and again around Myrtle Beach. Charleston will be the huge challenge, I can't foresee another ring road due to the environmentally sensitive areas. Charleston's geography and growth has it backed into a corner and there simply isn't a lot of room for new roads. Will be interesting to see how everything plays out over the next few decades what with sea level rise as well.

I'm very familiar with the various bypasses in Myrtle Beach- which has 17 Business, 17 Bypass and a true limited access bypass/parkway across the Intercoastal Waterway. We simply cannot achieve that because we are already too developed. The most we could do is another loop or bridge to try and reduce the traffic that comes into closer in West Ashley or Mt Pleasant only to drive further out again.

And as an aside- Johnny Dodds is actually a bypass of 17 which originally ran down Coleman and back out to the 526/Johnnie Dodds interchanges near Walmart.

It could be done if its taken from outer WA up to Summerville, wrap around SV and GC and then back down towards Wando/Cainhoy.

So main st going to johns island is flooded again. Only one way on the island. This is why 526 should be built. They just spent 500k at that intersection. Waste of money

I think a lot of people would agree road improvements need to be made, but not a $750,000,000 boondoggle.

You know, the one where the vanquishing hero has to lie to people in a effort to get the money.

Hilarious. Kill a fly with a bazooka.

The flooding on main road (not st) is not hard to fix compared to building 526. They could throw a steel military bridge in there in a day and it would be fixed and would not cost hundreds of millions.
