Katenik,
Search the forum and you'll find a lot of opinions expressed on Daniel Island and they tend to run pretty hot and cold. I think DI is great for some folks and not the right environment for others. It's a bit of a world unto itself compared to the rest of the Charleston area largely because it was only made accessible in the mid 90's (via I-526) and so as Macalan said, it has a lot more planning behind it. Very popular among those who live there!
Also, you might want to include the area right above what is technically pegged as Daniel Island. Beresford Creek, Beresford Hall, and other neighborhoods depending on budget. While you might not drive your golf cart to the Publix, it's still as convenient to everything and also very pretty.
Thanks to all who replied. I don't object to a hyper-planned community, as long as it isn't a sea of homes in alternating shades of sand and pumice. I took a virtual tour of Daniel Island, via a YouTube video, and I really like the way it looks. I currently reside in a very old house, in a very old neighborhood, in a very old city, and I can't wait to leave this place, and have a beautiful view from my front door.
One thing that we enjoy here is the nature. Lots of ponds around, and lots of Great Blue Herons, Snowy Egrets and other birds. Of course there are also alligators, like everywhere down here, but they mind their own business if you do.
The other morning we were sitting in our living room and out the back door (which looks out over green space and woods) saw three deer running across the lawn. It was beautiful.
If you want to rent for a bit so you can get to know the area before you buy highly recommend Greystar. They do offer short-term rentals and it's a great place to live.
If you are looking for townhouses, there's lots on Daniel Island as well - for rent as well as to buy - Daniel Island Drive, Thrower St., Pierce St., Barfield St. and Blakeway.
Can't rep you again, Macalan, but I appreciate your sharing your enthusiasm for the area. The Greystar property is already on my radar, and I will also investigate townhouse rentals when I'm there.
I have heard all the "Stepford" comments, as well as comments that it is "snotty" here and "dead".
After living here for a year, I can tell you nothing is further from the truth. Daniel Island is no more Stepford than Mount Pleasant, if Stepford means soccer moms and lots of SUVs.
However, that is not all that is here. There are plenty of retired people here, and regular people. There are lots of different groups here - Walking Groups, Social Groups, Exchange Club, Fishing Club, Free Tai Chi Classes, etc., and everyone has been nothing but welcoming.
And for people who think it is "dead" here, come here @ noontime and go downtown - the place is abuzz with people shopping, going to restaurants, running errands, etc., as it is all day. Perhaps it's because the parking lot is in back of the stores no one sees people milling about. But they are there. And weekends are busy. Not Mount Pleasant busy, but some people don't want that level of busyness and traffic nor a town of close to 70K. Some people like relative quiet and a slower pace.
Daniel Island also has tons of events throughout the year - Farmers Market, Pig Roast, Concerts in Smythe Park, Parades, Art Festivals, the Tennis Tournament, Concerts at the Tennis Stadium, Soccer at Blackbaud Stadium, etc., to bring the community together.
Also not sure if you have a dog, but both Greystar and Daniel Island are very, very dog/pet friendly, as is most of the area.
I love Daniel Island. I don't find it too quiet and it has great amenities, home appreciation is off the charts, love the golf cart action and parks, there's no poverty, and I don't mind the Stepford Wives/Truman Show/Disney look (Look at Celebration if you actually want to live in a Disney designed neighborhood)..but is nobody going to bring up the paper mill?

I just tell everyone it's pluff mud
