My only problem with the show was that it seems to me that no matter where Bourdain goes, before he gets into the food and any indoor foodie scenes, he pans the locale with great camera work to establish a sense of place for the viewer. In this episode, except for a couple of seconds before the theme song at the beginning of the show, he didn't show the city but rather went straight to a dark indoor bar scene. I was expecting to view the introduction of the show pretending to be someone who has never been to Charleston and gets to see it through Anthony Bourdain's eyes, the way I get to see everywhere he goes through his eyes at the beginning of the show. I love cityscape and I love the show. I feel Charleston should have gotten more exposure as a beautiful city, not less exposure than he typically gives a city.

It's television!
Or as my father used to call it, "the idiot box". (Oh the memories, lol.)

Anthony Bourdain is TEARING up Leon with camera work focused on the city throughout tonight's episode. He did the same with Marseille (sp) last episode. Not so Charleston.

I thought the show was well done. It spent time going over the evolution of southern food and how Charleston chefs are turning it into something new and unique. No it didn't show lots of the city. I felt it had some good camera work to show some of the architecture. But the show talked about the roots of southern foods, and if you listened to the stories the chef talked about, the camera work of the fields, Shem Creek, and tidal creeks make sense. Charleston isn't just the city itself. Charleston has always been the embodiment of the Southern low country. To see that.. feel it.. they had to move out of the city.

I understand the general Lowcountry shots, and I understand the limited time factor, but I still say that unlike in his other episodes, the "portrait of the place in the episode's title" shots were conspicuously absent. But then his city-scape shots are 90% of the reason I watch his show.
