I won't address the culture aspects of your post, but -

You can find mortadella at Whole Foods, the Publix on Johnnie Dodds in Mt Pleasant has Boar's Head sharp provolone and hard salami; Trader Joe's carries some imported Italian products, as well as Whole Foods.

Maybe ask someone who owns/is a chef at a good Italian restaurant if there is an Italian market or where they buy their products?

Here's an alternate view from another Italian-American (Bronx-born): My wife and I recently bought a second home in MtP with the intention of retiring and moving here from the New York area in about two years. We picked the Charleston area because of all the wonderful things it has to offer - weather, culture and people. We are very happy with our choice.

True, we haven't found a salumeria and it takes a bit more driving to get the Italian food we like, but we have found pretty much everything we have been looking for. Among many other benefits, being here is a wonderful opportunity to learn a new style of cooking and take advantage of the wide variety of fresh and delicious ingredients. Looking forward to expanding our horizons.
