There's a ton of good information/opinion coming out on schools in this thread. I agree with Mr Peatie's friend that James Island HS is a gem and I think it's a bit underrated. While not small, it's roughly 1/3 the population of Wando HS and has a good academic reputation. James Island itself is a bit of a different animal from Mt Pleasant though with a lot less restaurants and much less shopping opportunities. It's a bit less expensive as well.

My daughter went to AMHS and there's no doubt it's a good school. I think she benefited from the smaller school experience though that might not be the case for a student who is sports oriented. The student body there was an excellent group of kids. She graduated over 10 years ago so it may have changed but it's academic reputation has not tarnished any.

Daniel Island is very nice. It is also very safe.

I don't know about house rentals for 6 months - maybe the realtors here can speak to that. Most rentals I see are for a year for a house. There are 2 really nice apartment complexes here where you can do any kind of lease you want.

It is very quiet here, lots of walking trails that connect all the different neighborhoods, lots of parks (every neighborhood has it's own), a lake that has events (concerts, etc.). Great community. Everything is close at hand. And a big drawing card to Daniel Island is proximity to everything - it's @15-20 min from Mount Pleasant (for more shopping and restaurants, the hospitals, etc), the beaches, downtown Charleston, and the airport.

It has the basics of what you need for day-to-day living - doctors, dentists, grocery store, banks, vet, dog park, churches, fire station, pharmacy, library, schools (the high school is private - kids are bused to the public High School for now in Hanahan), and a handful of shops and restaurants. It does not have a hospital or a hardware store, so you would need to travel off-site for that.

Anywhere in Charleston area is going to have snakes. Most are harmless, but they do have venomous Copperhead snakes here. Also black window and brown recluse spiders and alligators. But that's the South. You're going to get that anywhere warm.
