Maybank Station is a retail center planned for the southeast corner of Maybank Highway and River Road in the John's Island community in Charleston County, South Carolina. A 53,282-square-foot Harris Teeter supermarket and a 14,820-square-foot freestanding Walgreen's drugstore are initially planned according to the site plan. The site plan may have changed as Harris Teeter could be larger at 60,000 square feet, could have a pharmacy drive thru, and/or could have a fuel center.

Thanks Knight, any timetable on this project yet? I last heard it would be 2017.

I cannot find a timetable for Maybank Station. I know Harris Teeter, two years into being a subsidiary of Kroger, is more active in new store construction, is opening larger stores at 78,000 square feet, and is implementing fuel stations and pharmacy drive thru at new and existing stores.

I would absolutely love to see a Harris Teeter Marketplace.

I am unaware of Harris Teeter planning to open any Marketplace hypermarket stores yet. Kroger is proceeding with five Kroger Marketplace stores in South Carolina.

I know of 1 that is actually under construction: Killian Road outside Columbia. The Hilton Head/Buckwalter Place Marketplace is still in the dreaming stage and has not broken ground. Do you know where the other 3 are?

They would be:
  • Capital City Stadium, 301 South Assembly Street, Columbia, South Carolina 29201-4548
  • West Main Street at Highway 378, Lexington, South Carolina
  • Pratt Springs Road between Old Orangeburg Road and South Lake Drive, Lexington, South Carolina

That will be good for the area. Columbia's grocery market is a great growth opportunity.

I find Columbia's grocery participants in Richland and Lexington counties to be similar to the Charleston area in Charleston and Dorchester counties. Bi-Lo, Food Lion, Piggly Wiggly with reduced store count and independent ownership, Publix, and Walmart participate in both markets. Kroger has a presence in the Columbia area, and Harris Teeter has a presence in the Charleston area.

It definitely compares. I feel like there are a whole lot more Harris Teeters in Charleston than there are Kroger stores in Columbia.
