What is the difference if any, that a Uber driver must go through to become a driver, versus a taxi driver in South Carolina? I see some states actually do background criminal checks, fingerprints etc.
Does anyone know what they do here? Someone told me they do background checks, but what kind I asked, and they couldnt say.

That is a question that no one at Uber will answer. I have heard (RUMOR) that Uber only cares whether their underwriter will insure you.

About halfway down the page s Uber's official answer.

I know of driver's who have several of those items on their records and still drive for Uber.

So, sketchy at best. Taxi services are at least a business recognized for years, if you stick with known companies.

Uber is like Craigslist but for rides.

I occasionally drive for Uber. It's interesting. I get to meet some neat people and have only had one bad experience.

But yeah, it's hit and miss on driver quality.

EDIT TO ADD: I've seen taxis in Charleston that I wouldn't even let Ziggy ride in.

What kind of background check did you need, or have done.

Well that advocates for caution ... but how does one "cautiously" hire an Uber ride?

I just had the Uber one. It came back in less than a day. (In fairness, I had a TS/SCI clearance, so my history was clean.)

I know this wasn't directed to me, but here's a starting point. If your driver has a low rating, below 4.7, wait a few minutes and request again. Don't be afraid to give honest ratings. It gets the bad drivers off the streets.

Thanks ... that does help.
