The SC DOR is very, very aggressive at collecting the tax that is owed. The state operates on a pay-as-you-go basis. People who are used to just "going exempt" and stiffing the government will find themselves getting arrested in South Carolina.
A friend of mine is an accountant. SC DOR does these arrests all over the area at various companies.
How did they claim tax exempt to start? I've only ever heard of people getting away with that who actually claim residence in another state or are military?
A friend of mine that was the CFO of National Cash Register plant (since closed) in SC said he was visited several times by SC DOR agents wanting employment/income statements on employees. This is not uncommon.
Within the last 6 months or so, several Richland County Sheriff Department employees were arrested for playing games on their taxes.
That's what they said in the papers, they falsified W-4's and did not file tax returns. How dumb do you have to be -- you earn money in a state and never bother to submit a tax return. Of course they will catch up to you.

Yes, very dumb! Maybe in the old days, one may escape the agents but with the days of computerization, it is very hard to skirt the system. Ummm how many dogs and cats do you claim? Hee hee!
People need to wake up. Someday they will get caught and it seems like very fast in SC!
