It failed in Houston. They completely pulled out all locations simultaneously. But Whole Foods has taken over like a plague there. I just don't get it. Maybe it's a yuppie vs. hippie thing.

I would love to see Sprouts or Lucky's Market come to Charleston.

The Fresh Market should be in Charleston already.

I think The Fresh Market overextended itself to the point it is closing stores, exiting states, canceling leases for proposed stores, and delaying the openings of completed stores. It needs to focus on its existing footprint and improve itself as a specialty gourmet grocer.

They may be hesitating. Deciding where to put it would really be key. Earth Fare spectacularly failed in Mt. Pleasant and their new store in Summerville is routinely empty. Southern Seasons also recently failed as well.

Fresh Market could have opened a new store in West Ashley, but the new Whole Foods likely crushed those dreams.

The Post and Courier has a new story about the new grocery gap on the peninsula left by the closing Bi-Lo.

No one is going to be able to afford to run a grocery store on a $10 million piece of real estate unless it's in a building with other tenants.

Bi-Lo’s departure to leave grocery gap on Charleston peninsula - Post and Courier

There is not a grocery gap on the peninsula.

Harris Teeter #277 is nearby. I project it will see an increase of business. Harris Teeter would be smart to add a pharmacy to the store.

Food Lion #1420, Kings Plaza, 1015 King Street, Charleston, South Carolina 29403-3701, may be the next supermarket on the peninsula to close.

I agree with you, they just called it that because there isn't a grocery store within a mile.

That Food Lion could close. It opened in 1997 as a public-private partnership, but it is routinely in the news for being robbed blind.

The lower income community finds HT too expensive. I would have guessed that FL would close down but maybe this will boost their clientele enough for them to hold on. If the FL closes it will be hard for the remaining low income residents in the area.

I have heard Food Lion's prices are drastically higher than Harris Teeter. Badly performing stores usually have higher prices to make up for sales. It is a quick way to deter business.
