I am surprised Bi-Lo #5751, 630 Skylark Drive, Charleston, South Carolina 29407-1718, is not closing instead of Bi-Lo #5745.
You're right - that one surprises me too unless they're just getting that much business from the lower Sam Ritt / Hwy 17 area. My only interaction with that center involves Craft Conundrum though, I don't exactly pay attention to anything else around there.
Rumor only ... tho from a usually reputable source ... Bi Lo doesn't own the underlying property.. lease renewal is coming up shortly ...the area has become somewhat gentrified since the original lease was signed ...especially considering the extensive new residential apartment developments just east of the store ... has made that plot of land quite valuable...couldn't come to an agreement with the landowner...hence the termination and closure. Its also become quite evident that Bi Lo's continued existence isn't long for our world.
That land is zoned for just about anything... (except for a cemetery)...lol...but IM not sure any grocery chain will find it economically suitable...unless market share is a priority... plus having to compete with office and residential developers interest in the area who probably be willing to pay up to get it.
The Mayor has a plan. I am not sure CARTA transporting people from a closing Bi-Lo to a dirty Food Lion is really helping anyone. Can't the bus take them to a better grocery store?
Why would I want to utilize CARTA to travel to Food Lion #1420, Kings Plaza, 1015 King Street, Charleston, South Carolina 29403-3701, for the lack of necessities, extra high prices, no availability of fresh foods and quality products, and no service?

Its not about what you want, its about what lower income residents around there need.
They need to do like they have in a couple cities i saw. Put a apartment building there with a whole foods under it.
This is my thinking also though not sure about Whole Foods. Would be no different than the new WestEdge building that will have apartments over a Publix and a parking garage.
