I'll be visiting Charleston with my family for a few days around Christmas. What attractions would you recommend for a first time visitor? Feel free to discuss nearby places to visit as well.
The festival of lights at James Island Park for sure! They have quite a few activities after you ride through all the sponsored light setups. If you can stand the cold and wind, I prefer the battery around evening hours. If you find yourself in Summerville, take a stroll through Pine Forest. One of the houses in there attract many people every year. I think the guy owns the electric company so you won't miss his house off Congressional Blvd.
Ditto James Island Park's festival of lights. Charleston City Market, Waterfront Park and White Point (The Battery) downtown and take a carriage ride, weather permitting. Plenty of excellent places to eat around the Charleston metro.

Thanks for the festival of lights recommendation. I went there on Christmas Eve.
