Hi all,

My husband had to go to Charleston for work and is thinking about taking the train. He doesn't want to drive from VA to SC as its roughly a 6 hour drive and there are no direct flights from Richmond to Charleston. Can you all tell me about that station. I googled, and it said North Charleston isn't a great area. Is the station itself safe? Are Ubers/Lyfts available in the area or are there cabs available at the station? He'd be arriving at 7pm and leaving in the morning a few days later.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The station itself is fine,,, the area around it is so-so but safe......uber/ lyft and cabs are available.

But ...and its a big but ... the trip originating in DC would be considered a milk train ... lots of stops ...old equipment...not a lot of services on board. I have no personal experience taking the train ... but a friend took it from DC 3-4 years ago thinking it would be a pleasant ride ... it wasn't ... cashed in his return ticket and flew back..... things may have changed I guess ....someone else on this site may have a newer experience..

It'd be from Richmond not DC.

Thanks for the info on the station itself.

What they’re saying is the Richmond train is the DC train, you’re just hopping on in Richmond.
I’ve picked up relatives from that station coming the other direction from Florida. The only negative they have experienced was the train itself was late by about an hour. Apparently there’s a lot of other rail traffic that slows things down.
In theory however it was just as fast as driving but far more relaxing.

The Amtrak station has a fence around it. Wait there for the Uber/Lyft.

Yes and please don’t judge Charleston by it’s train station. It really does get better.

Actually the train starts out in New York... my friend got on in DC .. just like your husband will get on in Richmond .... 11 stops after Richmond until you get to Charleston. I believe there is a business class which would be a bit more comfortable

The I-95 Highway from Richmond down to Charleston is a pretty easy run, I think.
How often does DH have to do this drive ?? Be nice to have the car once he gets here.

What time does the Amtrak arrive in North Chas. I'd hate to be in that area late at night.

I take Amtrak from Charleston to Fayetteville, NC o 've a.month to visit my daughter and grand children. It is comfortable, quiet, and pleasant
and has a food/beverage car. WIFI is available and is free. I highly recommend it.

The current Amtrak station is straight outta the 1970s. Relatively clean, but extremely dated.
