No. It would mess up the look of the US flag with the stars in perfect even rows. If we do split, we should keep the SC flag because we’re the only ones with palmetto trees. Upstate can have the same flag but with a maple tree on it or something.

But seriously, New Cali wants to split because politically and socially they have nothing in common with the big coastal cities and they’ll never have any significant political representation despite being 80% of the geographic area of the state. SC is politically very similar all over the state, especially compared to CA. CA is just too big and diverse.
Nationally our representation would be even weaker given we wouldn’t have as many representatives. Our vote would be no more critical than Vermont’s. Presidential candidates probably wouldn’t even bother campaigning here.
Its actually good the state is geographically diversified. If a hurricane took out the coast, the entire new state’s economy would be wrecked While it rebuilds. It’s nice to have some inland areas that still have a functioning economy while the coast rebuilds.

On another note, in US history is seems like we were pumping out a couple new states every decade. Then it all came to a stop in the 1950’s. Is it because we were tired of buying new flags?

There are like 400 people in "80% of the geographic area" of California. It seems like you're implying that their votes should be worth more than everyone else's. Someone might even be inclined to use the word "snowflake" in a situation like this.

California is crazy, why follow their nonsense? They are the most anti law & order state in the U.S. Why think about copying anything they do, they show how they don't want any law or order by trying to secede from the U.S.

They don’t want their vote to count more, they just want better representation. LA and SF would still be free to do whatever they want. By your rationale, the US colonies were a bunch of snowflakes.

But regardless, I’m not a big fan of splitting states over temporary political differences.

There’s like 20 different secession movements in CA right now. This isn’t the secession from the US one, nor the spilt CA into 6 states one, it’s the desert counties seceding from the coastal cities one.

It's nothing like the colonies, who had no representation, by the way. The rural parts of CA, and most of the US for that matter, are represented proportional to their population. That's democracy, but it's also common sense. We're not going to redraw the map because of fleeting political views.

What people forget about this nonsense is that the New Californians want to break away from LA, SF, Oakland, and Sacramento, but then try to keep San Diego, Orange County, San Jose, the LA exurbs, Palm Springs, Conta Costa (rich Oakland), and Yolo (rich Sacramento).

All of those places would never leave old California behind, and they have nothing in common with "New Cali." These new Cali folks basically gerrymandered a California map to make sure they still have somewhat of a tax base and an economy, because it's either that or a state based off agriculture, desert, Bakersfield, Stockton, and Fresno - the 3 cities no one has ever mentioned when they say "I wanna move to Cali!"

The places that would actually make up New California - so not San Diego, San Jose, OC etc - are mainly taker counties. The "liberal nutjob snowflake anti-law" coastal counties foot the bill for them. Take all that away and you have nothing but Fresno, which had an 11% unemployment rate a year ago, and Stockton, which went bankrupt.

But again SC is nowhere near in that position or situation. Can't believe someone actually said Charleston and Myrtle is footing the bill for the rest of the state and that SC would go in the red without it...some of yall act like Greenville and Columbia is Dubai and Abu Dhabi, while Charleston is Baghdad. It's hilarious.

It seems Greenville/Columbia areas epically with road projects come first . While Charleston has the worse traffic out of the state it should be top priority. Even mrytle beach. It no way mrytle beach should still be without a highway going to it from any direction.

There's more to life than roads...but even then, it's not true. The Malfunction Junction fix isn't starting soon. The rest of Charleston's I26 is getting widened before the rest of Columbia's I26. Greenville is getting the new 85/385 interchange so quickly because there was no nimbys around to stop it, but I26 around Boeing gets up to 10 lanes, while 85 around BMW is just now getting widened to 8, and BMW has been there since the early 90's.

526 should've been done back in the 90's before I was even born. Blaming Greenville for 24 years of delays is pretty dumbfounding. Charleston is getting a new interchange for Volvo, all new exit 197, all new exit for Ingleside, 26 widened, eventual 526 widening and new 526/26 interchange, a new interchange for the new port terminal, multiple new city road projects, etc, etc.

Go to the SCDOT construction webpage and there's more Lowcountry projects displayed than Upstate and Midlands projects combined. So again, I don't know where yall get this narrative from.

Charleston's traffic is not everybody elses fault. That's on local leaders, geography, and the terrible road design. The Folly/Rittenburg/Wesley/Fielding/Ashley River/Albermarle intersection wasn't Spartanburg's idea.

Also not their fault that Myrtle has no interstate. You seem to think paving a new highway is a piece of cake and just requires funding. I73 has been planned since the early 80's. Do you seriously think that Upper SC has held up I73 for 30 years because they didn't want to give Horry money?

Article headline from Myrtle Beach on 12/30/15: "Myrtle Beach/North Myrtle Beach battle holding up I73 route." Don't see what Columbia has to do with Horry's infighting. Don't see what they have to do with the leaders, nimby's, CCL, and other people who keep suing and fighting either, which delays 526 and 73 further.

You need to venture out of Charleston more, because you once you pass 95, the state doesn't turn into some magical new place like you think it does. Charleston has it good, just needs a serious redesign of many interchanges and intersections. The Upstate does not hate Charleston, nor are they to blame for 526 being a whole generation behind schedule.

Wondering if Charleston should secede because of it is just...hilariously silly.

It’s a county by county thing in CA. They wouldn’t invite San Diego along for the ride if they thought they wouldn’t go for it. San Diego and Orange Counties are more conservative than the rest of the state.

They may be taker counties now, but they probably want to cut loose those $200 billion dollar pension shortfalls that will need to get paid. They can make their money back selling water to the coastal cities..lol
