It's almost as if they're wanting to eliminate the need for shipping through UPS by starting their own delivery fleet. Can anyone verify this is the goal?

The article spells out their plans. Small companies that use the Amazon vans to deliver locally under contract.

M1 is correct but there is possibly more to it. A few years ago they started looking into having their own delivery networks. They wanted enough of a standing fleet to be able to negotiate pricing with all the shipping companies. They went as far as investigating the feasibility of also setting up an air fleet as well.

So while this is smaller/local its also a show of force in some respects.

There are other companys here too. As far as the Electronics field, what in particular does your husband do. I am in the Electronics field, working on ships, subs, etc. We are a company that gets contracts from SPAWAR. There are many electronic contract companys that offer decent pay with travel around the globe.
PM me if interested..

Bosch could be another option? Not sure how big they are in comparison to the others already mentioned.

Definately gives them the power to renegotiate their contracts with UPS, USPS etc

Several employers are crying that they cannot find "skilled" workers so your husband should not have trouble finding skilled job. The only "problem" will be salary. $45-50K in the Charleston area is considered a good paying job. As an example. Boeing production line workers average about $35K.
