There are two or three Mexican restaurants on either side of Folly Road in James Island that are packed at meals times. I stopped to get take-out menus and the entry way of one smelled so bad, I almost didn't bother getting the take out menu. Are these places good? I'm wondering if the reason the places are busy is maybe due to the cheap drinks and not so much the food.
Are there places maybe in West Ashley that are good? I'd love to find a place with good fajitas that doesn't serve them on deep fried tortillas but that has plain flour and corn tortillas with marinated sauted fillings and good guacomole and salsas that uses fresh ingredients.
LaHacienda's are known more for their happy hours than great food. Though they're very inexpensive and worth it during lunch hours. My favorite places are still On The Border in Mt. P Towne Center, Uno Mas along 17N in Mt. Pleasant, and the Moe's chain spots for good "pick your own ingredients" tacos and burritos. Juanita Greenberg's is great as well.
There's a really good one in the shopping center where the West Ashley Walmart used to be (across from St. Francis Hosp). I can't think of the name of it, but it is directly across from Home Depot...I like the food there better than La Hacienda's. Senor Tequila's on 61 diagnally across from Barnes and Nobles is good. We have a few good Mexican Restaurants on Johns Island, the best and newest being Maria's (next to Hickory Hawg). The one next to the Pig on Maybank Hwy. (Johns Island) won "Best Mexican Food in Charleston Area" award last year - as listed in the Post & Courier.
I would recommend going downtown to Juanita Greenbergs. Before we lived here, we used to drive from Myrtle Beach just to eat there. It's that good. : )

I've seen Moe's in Mt. P across from Whole Foods and also spotted the one downtown. I'll have to check out the others on a slow traffic day. Maybe next time I'm at Whole Foods I'll try out Moe's. Thanks!
