Greetings. I'll be moving to Charleston with my wife and 2year old daughter in the summer for a one-year stint at MUSC. We'll be renting (in the 1000-1500/month range) and really aren't set on any particular place to live. I would prefer to be within a 20min commute to the hospital and have looked at Downtown, James Island, and Mt. Pleasant, but am open to ideas. Any suggestions for an active family looking for a safe but fun area to live for a year? Thanks.
I would choose Mt Pleasant for the short term. We are close to the beach, county park and we certainly feel very safe here. Some of the neighbourhoods to look at for rental are Brickyard, Snee Farm and Park West - there are quite a few more - perhaps being closer to the bridge will get you into downtown in 10 min - we used to rent in the Old Village - lovely homes, before choosing Brickyard to purchase - great amenities for kids, pretty walks, boat ramp etc., and about 20 mins from MUSC. Downtown is probably going to be more expensive and not that great for little ones. Sorry don't know much about James Island, although I would not count it out.
