My sister-in-law and I are looking to visit Charleston in July or August of 2022. Suggestions for safe places to stay (somewhere with a kitchen preferred) within a reasonable budget and sites we need to see.

Look in Mount Pleasant as close to the Cooper River Bridge as you can get. Nice, safe, easy access to everywhere.
I was also going to suggest around the airport, there's plenty of suite type hotels around Tanger Outlet which are quite centrally located and close to travel corridors, restaurants, and shopping. From Tanger to Downtown is about a 10-15 minute drive if you stay out of rush hour traffic.
Right around Tanger is fine, but goes down hill quickly 1/2 mile in any direction. Don’t be lured into staying at the Ashley Phosphate exit either. Everything considered the Patriots Point area is best if you can’t stand the HD prices.
I spotted this Folly hotel the other day for the first time. Looks very interesting to me. I don't know anything about it yet because I have not inquired yet. Everything is within walking distance. It is located right next to the Folly River Boat Ramp. Its address is: 87 Center St, Folly Beach, SC 29439.
Looks like they also have some select homes for rent.
Just make sure to check out the Cooper river online before you plan to have to drive on it all the time during your visit. It is quite high and can be a bit scary.
I almost never cross that bridge!

That sounds like a post that would apply to the old Cooper River Bridges. The "new" bridge (built in 2005) is not a challenge for most people.
