Well, it's music to my ears that public schools are so good that people go that route. Public school is definitely the preferred option!

I signed up my son for the wait list for Oceanside but he's like #300 so I don't think that will be an option for this next year...

As far as work, we are both primarily remote so hopefully, commuting isn't an issue. Is the commute within Mount Pleasant bad? It seemed fine while visiting going from one end to the other.

Thank you sincerely for your help and the information. I really appreciate it!

If you were visiting during the holidays, you won't have seen the real traffic. That said, Mt P is not so bad on traffic as long as you can avoid rush hr. It gets crowded but the roadways still flow reasonably well most of the time.

Any school in Mt. Pleasant will be fine.
Wando is the 'original'. Lucky Beckham is newer but has fast gained a positive image already. I've already been in social situations in Mt. Pleasant having Wando parents lamenting that Lucy Beckham High SChool is not allowing students outside of their district to be able to attend the school. That's a good sign, it means there are opportunities at Beckham that they perceive might be better than Wando.

My opinion, both are GREAT school.s. Not sure of the tennis program at Beckham.

We moved to Mt. Pleasant in 2008 and I always heard the Daniel Island was the 'tennis community' but I'm sure there are programs in Mt. Pleasant

We visited a random mid week in November pre-holidays. It was busy but we have lived in SoCal and Northern Virginia too and traffic was nothing next to those places.

We are very excited to make the leap...now it's just a waiting game to finish this school year and wishing we could leave sooner! Appreciate all the feedback! It's so helpful! Thank you all!

I remember when they were planning Beckham and sized it smaller than the old Wando that used to be on that site. People were literally spitting nails about not being Zoned Wando... I thought it was odd as demographically both were pretty much guaranteed to be well achieving and Wando truly borders on ridiculous in terms of school size. It's funny that half a decade later people are now angry there is no additional room at Beckham.

My neighbors weren’t happy last year when they put temporary classrooms at Beckham. Apparently a lot of people are wanting to go to Beckham that don’t have an interest in sports.

Traffic in MtP is no where near as bad as it is in other parts of Charleston. However there definitely are some places you want to avoid at certain times of day. In the morning traffic coming into mtp from NChas on 526 is bad, which can affect travel to/from Daniel Island. Same in the afternoons - between 3-7 the traffic snarl on 26 west in North Charleston and Summerville is so severe that it literally backs up westbound 526 traffic all the way into MtP. So if you find yourself in the unfortunate position of having to drive from MtP to DI, for a 6pm tennis match for example, it might take an extra 10 minutes.

Inside of MtP, 17 gets congested at rush hour in both directions. But there are alternate routes. Both connectors (IOP and Sullivans Island) get ridiculous in the afternoons in July and August.

Once you learn the patterns, it’s no big deal. Nothing close to big city traffic.

Ehhh- if we are being honest about Mt P traffic, it definitely exists. Luckily, they were proactive and a new enough area to really work on widening 17, making multiple connections to the IOP connector, and using the whole variety of road layouts. It helps that 17 inside of 526 is newer as it was a bypass to chuck dawley-Coleman so there was room to widen and reconfigure without disturbing businesses/houses as would be the case in James Island or West Ashley. But traffic past 526 is still stout in the morning and afternoon & even making it through all the lights on empty 17 takes time. And 41 is brutal in most scenarios.

Its always best to visit and then drive whatever your commute or drive to school/play/activities will be at different times. I live locally and have quit activities/passed on a possible purchase when the drive is too burdensome during the actual times I would make it. Viewing houses at 10am and 2pm can give a very distorted view of traffic.

The easiest and relatively accurate way of gauging traffic is to use Google Maps and choose different times of day/days of week to see how the times vary. Note that if maps shows a range of times, it usually means that the lower time is without delays but that there's often delays. For instance, from my house on James Island right now (11:15AM on a weekday) it shows approximately 30 minutes to the tennis stadium on DI. If I choose to leave at 7:25AM it shows 30-50 minutes. If there was to be an accident or something that really bollixed up traffic, it could be a lot longer.

Traffic in Mt P is rarely very bad outside of rush hours and even then it's not terrible. Not by SoCal or NoVa standards at least.

I think sentiments ran both ways when Beckham was being zoned. At one point they were talking about zoning Sullivan's Island into LB and leaving Belle Hall in Wando. That didn't go over so well.
The LB zone is pretty compact so if you're in that, you wouldn't have much of a distance to travel to the school. The Wando zone is much bigger and can involve much longer travel time on a busy school morning.
