Alligators will be found anywhere near the marsh, ponds, rivers and wetlands. Occassionally, they wander where they're not supposed to, but seldom. Nuisance alligators can be trapped by the Department of Natural Resources and returnd to their habitat. (They are even found on the golf courses.) Typically, they will move into the water for safety from humans. If they are the stubborn type, they will just sit and stare. Once you have lived here awhile, the novelty and fear will subside in most people.
If you leave them alone, they will leave you alone. Do not feed them, keep your pets away from the posted areas, and in a fenced yard and you shouldn't have a problem.

Our family is also moving to Charleston in July and looking for a house to rent for the first year. We were ready to sign a lease agreement today for a very nice home in Hamlin Plantation (The Sound subdivision) and noticed signs posted throughout the community "Beware of alligators". This is a big concern for us coming from Colorado.
