We love both Charleston and the research triangle areas but are curious about what the job situation looks like in each. Can anyone who has relocated to the Charleston area provide some insight about the job market there? I've read it's not really the best market, however, hearing from some folks who have actually made the move would be very helpful.

The triangle area of N.C. appears to be one of the best job markets in the country although heavily favoring medical and IT.

Any insight is appreciated.

I have also heard the pay here in Charleston is less and cost of living is more from clients I have worked with.

I think comparing Charleston and the Triangle area is like comparing apples and oranges--the two are very different though both have their pluses. THe Triangle surely has more high-tec opportunities, though Charleston just landed a big Google facility.

Both areas have biotech as a focus, but the Triangle has the best local economy, hands down. But Charleston does very well for itself with a diversified economy, with the major economic drivers being tourism, the Port of Charleston, defense technology, and higher education (Medical Univ. of SC, College of Charleston, Charleston Southern Univ., The Citadel, Charleston School of Law, Trident Technical College, etc.).
