I was talking with someone about this area today. We have driven by it when it town but was wondering what the story was behind it. Anyone familiar with the area?

If you're talking about the old American Tobacco plant down on the East side of the Peninsula, it closed circa 1970.
They wrapped the cigars with the type of tobacco used for this purpose.
Big employer in the day.
As far as the area goes, I'm sure it is (or was, as the effect of the depression sinks in) scheduled for gentrification.
The development of the Cigar Factory loft condominiums in this soft market is a bit "gutsy", although there is very little competition in the "loft" type condo market downtown.
These condos (priced from $429K to $1.6M) will appeal to higher income professionals who work downtown. The location is still "fringe" but as someone pointed out, scheduled for gentrification. The only "but" is the fact that it faces the Port of Charleston's container yard! Not the best view (unless, of course, you like port operations...)

By "gentrification", I meant the state's racist policy of using "Heir's Land" to evict lower income folks so hustlers from Scranton and Schnectady can move in and plot ways to screw widows out of their Social Security checks.
