Last week I got a speeding ticket in Jamestown. I think the cop actually clocked the wrong person but either way I got a 4 point ticket. I've never had any points!! They only have court every 2 weeks and only on Wed afternoon. I haven't worked since last Oct and just got a job on Tues and Wed and court falls on my 2nd week of work. I called the court and they offered me 0 points and a $237 fine which is an increase from the original $185. My other option is 2 points and $85. Any suggestions? I feel like they just want my money which I don't even have! It doesn't seem fair! I don't think I've ever had a point in the over 20 years I've been driving and now all of a sudden 4 points. The person I talked to said that would be all the judge would offer me anyway. It seems to me that a person with my driving record would be given some sort of break even if they were speeding. This will probably make my insurance go up quite a bit. Also, I've never heard of a ticket being that expensive. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Ohhh Jamestown is a huge speed trap. My advice, take the 0 points/237 fine. The only ticket my mom ever received in her life was there and they didn't cut her a break. Hers was 2 pts/85. fine.
Of course they just want your money. What will the points do to your insurance & if you get caught speeding again? Only you can decide if the extra money is worth having all your points gone. Personally -- having sat in a court room with my son for three hours so he can plead 'no contest' and get no points just a fine -- I'd pay the extra and be done with it.
You need to check with your insurance comapany to see if they go by points or moving violations.....
State Farm started going by moving violations now, the points on the ticket don't matter, they started doing this because of police and judges dropping points for higher fines.....
A Careless operations ticket cost as much as a four point speeding ticket and hangs around for three years.....
Points vs. moving violations? What does that mean? They said something about an MVR or MBR when I called them. They also said that points stay on your record for 5 years!
I just got my first ticket in 20 years last month. I got 2 points, which does not affect my insurance - I called about it. Paid an $81 fine. I had planned on going to court to fight it due to the tree branches hiding the speed limit sign and that there isn't another one for several miles...but DUMB ME misread my trial date and missed it. (yes, I looked at the "time" 8 30, instead of the date 8 20 ) so didn't get to go plead my case. So, I called the court, explained why I missed my trial and sent in my money order. At least now I know that the speed limit is 40 mph and not 45mph (even though everyone else now flies around me)...learned my lesson.
